Salty Dawgs Set Antigua for Fall Rally Destination

The Salty Dawg Board of Directors announced today that the destination of the 2017 Fall Rally will be Falmouth Harbour, Antigua. The sixth annual Fall Rally from Hampton Virginia and other points on the East Coast to the Caribbean is scheduled to depart on Nov. 2, weather permitting.

The decision by the Board comes as a result of the damage caused to the British Virgin Islands by Hurricane Irma last week. "The destination for the Salty Dawg Fall Rally has been the Bitter End Yacht Club since its inception six years ago," said President Bill Knowles, " We are saddened by the horrible devastation they are experiencing. Our thoughts and prayers are with the staff and employees and all the citizens of the BVI and other islands affected by Hurricane Irma."

In Antigua, the Salty Dawg fleet can enjoy many of the same benefits that they are accustomed to in the British Virgin Islands. Wonderful anchorage opportunities in Falmouth Harbour can accommodate the fleet. Historic sites in Nelson’s Dockyard, excellent marine services, plenty of opportunities for socializing, interesting hikes, super dining options, and more will make for a memorable time for the Salty Dawgs in Antigua. And, Antigua offers excellent flight connections to the US, England and Europe for crew flying out or guests coming in.

From Antigua, Dawgs can choose to explore the Leeward and Windward chains. Some may choose to do the downwind sail to the BVI from Antigua, once we have word from BVI officials that they will welcome visitors, volunteers, and relief supplies aboard vessels. Or vessels may stay in Antigua and enjoy the friendly yachting oriented community. A rally destination in Antigua gives Salty Dawgs many attractive options.

Information from BVI officials suggested to the Board that our cruisers stay out of the way of ongoing relief and rebuilding activities in the BVIs this fall. Even though we will head directly for Antigua, the Salty Dawgs will have multiple opportunities to lend assistance to the BVI. We will be addressing those in a separate communique tomorrow.
