was refueled at sea by the American tanker, USNS John Ericsson. |

Whilst on a recent visit to Djibouti,
Operation Atalanta’s Force Commander, Commodore Luyckx, paid a visit to
the German National Support Element (NSE) and Support Element Atalanta
(SEA). Both provide crucial logistical support to the counter-piracy
operation. |

Protecting potentially vulnerable
vessels from piracy off the coast of Somalia is one of Operation
Atalanta’s key tasks. Italian warship, ITS Euro, recently escorted
World Food Programme (WFP) ship MV Antaios as she transited through the
Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden carrying precious food-aid. |

Operation Atalanta’s Force Commander,
Commodore Rene Luyckx, recently visited the AMISOM marine unit at
Mogadishu International Airport. The visit was one of a series made by
the Commodore to regional partners who are working hard to strengthen
maritime security in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean. |

Royal Netherlands Navy Commodore
Luyckx received a briefing on the capabilities of the Djiboutian Navy
by its Head of Operations and was impressed with the professionalism of
the staff and the set up of the Centre which aims to protect maritime
security in the waters off the Djiboutian coast. |

During his visit, Commodore Luyckx of
the Royal Netherlands Navy was introduced to the commanding officer,
air crew and ground support teams. He was then provided with briefings
regarding the P-3’s capabilities and later visited the aircraft, where
the crew explained in detail the equipment and sensors on board. |

the Commander of Combined Task Force (CTF) 151, Rear Admiral Nam of the

Operation Atalanta warships are on patrol
around the clock off the coast of Somalia to keep the seas safe from
piracy attack. Ensuring the ships remain topped up with fuel is a
logistical feat in the waters of the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean,
with opportunities for Replenishment at Sea (RAS) taken wherever
possible. |

Under the command of Commander Markus
Brüggemeier, during her time with the EU naval operation, the German
frigate and Operation Atalanta flagship sailed over 32,000 nautical
miles conducting sea patrols in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean to
ensure pirate attacks against seafarers remained suppressed. |

welcomed back Dutch frigate, HNLMS Tromp, to the EU Naval Force off the

Eighty eight days after joining the
EU Naval Force off the coast of Somalia and having sailed over 13,600
nautical miles, the German tanker support ship, FGS Spessart, is saying
goodbye to the EU’s counter-piracy operation ‘Atalanta’ off the coast
of Somalia. |

EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Somalia - Operation Atalanta is part of the EU's
comprehensive approach to tackle symptoms and root causes of piracy off the
coast of Somalia and the EU Strategic Framework for the Horn of Africa adopted
in November 2011.
EU NAVFOR conducts anti-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia and the
Indian Ocean and is responsible for the protection of World Food Programme
(WFP) shipping carrying humanitarian aid to the people of Somalia and Horn
of Africa as well as the logistic shippings supporting the African Union
troops conducting Peace Support Operations in Somalia (AMISOM).
Additionally, Operation Atalanta contributes to the monitoring of fishing
activity off the coast of Somalia.
