Coastal Art Maps expands its exquisite collection of hand-drawn maps
Coastal Art Maps, a New York-based map-making company, has expanded its exquisite collection of hand-drawn maps spotlighting the East Coast's most beautiful beaches, from Florida to New England. Each of these 27 breathtaking maps represent moments when an ever-changing world is briefly frozen in time.
The company's growing collection now includes the idyllic New England islands Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket - famous for their beaches, lighthouses, cobblestone streets and gray-shingled cottages - to the iconic Florida Keys - with its broad varieties of land forms and vast natural wonders - plus much of the stunning shoreline in between. Now, the newest offerings include six maps of the Chesapeake Bay area, showcasing the splendor of the Bay and the quaint Eastern Shore towns surrounding it.
Artist Joseph S. Tarella, Owner of Coastal Art Maps, creates stunning artwork using the time-honored tools of pen-and-ink and watercolor washes.
The tactile quality that Tarella achieves by using ink and watercolors on vellum allows for a kind of expression not easily achieved using more modern, mechanical methods.
"We've been getting overwhelmingly positive feedback about our maps, which are resonating well with a large, diverse audience, including the beach lover, boating enthusiast, avid sportsman, casual naturalist, art aficionado, and anyone familiar with the natural treasures along the beautiful, water-centric East Coast shoreline," said Joseph S. Tarella, Artist and Owner of Coastal Art Maps.
"Our growing roster of clients are thrilled to add these maps to their own art collections and/or give them as special, treasured gifts to family, friends, colleagues or clients. These maps, individually or as a group, make wonderful keepsakes in any home or office," Tarella added.
The newest additions to the Coastal Art Map collection spotlight the Chesapeake Bay, an iconic body of water, in all its complexity. Tarella expertly illuminates how the bay changes over its length, including major seaports, great rivers and an elaborate network of roads and rails that tie it all together. He depicts the great sand-bottomed bay and the surrounding area, including the boating capital of Annapolis, classic Maryland eastern shore towns like St. Michaels and Easton, and the bordering Baltimore metropolis. These maps capture the unique beauty of the mid-Atlantic shoreline, where people spend idyllic days boating, crabbing, enjoying the beaches, and visiting the lovely Victorian towns along the bay.
Tarella's northernmost maps spotlight the beauty of two New England island locales, which are rife with history. Located south of the Massachusetts/Cape Cod coastline, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket face out to the Atlantic Ocean and have launched thousands of ships from their well-protected harbors. Long at the center of the lucrative whaling industry, the islands were home to industrious and prosperous sea-farers and now are among the most popular summertime destinations in the area.
The company's southernmost maps depict the beloved Florida Keys, rendered in the well known natural divisions of Upper, Middle and Lower Keys. This collection vividly presents the many, varied isles, linked by the Overseas Highway, within the vast watery background of the southernmost part of the country. Each map represents approximately 25 miles and richly depicts the broad varieties of land forms, inhabited areas and vast natural wonders.
Coastal Art Maps also captures the magic of the coastline between Massachusetts and Florida, with rich, robust images of New York's East End of Long Island including Shelter Island, Fire Island and Montauk, New Jersey's Long Beach Island, Atlantic City and Cape May, Delaware's Rehoboth and Bethany beaches, Maryland's beloved Chesapeake Bay, Ocean City and more.
Tarella plans to introduce maps of Virginia's shoreline within the coming year.
"Coastal Art Maps started as a hobby. I like maps and traveling, and when I built a house on Long Beach Island, I couldn't find any maps of the area that I liked, so I created my own," Tarella explained. "When my friends and neighbors saw the map I'd created, they loved it and wanted their own versions. The labor-of-love company evolved from there."
"Since creating that first map of my Long Island Beach hometown, I've crafted maps of other, treasured East Coast locales, often based on customers' requests," Tarella continued. "From Nantucket to Key West, I've enjoyed exploring the exceptional details of our East Coast shorelines, capturing these breathtaking treasures for many generations to enjoy."
Tarella offers a series of limited-edition art maps of selected coastlines.
Each map presents an elegant, detailed and accurate rendering of selections of East Coast land areas, highlighting the juxtaposition and relationships between land and water, islands, parks, roadways, and other significant elements. These comprehensive and beautiful ink-and-watercolor compositions, offered on full size giclee canvas or half-size watercolor paper, make a truly unique and satisfying acquisition.
He combines his architectural experience, passion for travel and love of map-making to create stunning maps involving East Coast beaches. Coastal Art Maps has recently expanded, and now offers 27 different maps in circulation, depicting areas including the Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and Florida coastlines. Tarella, a trained architect and co-owner of SawickiTarella Architecture+Design PC, also customizes maps, identifying specific locations, per customer request.
